Reducing your Fuel Bills

With fuel bills rising and the credit crunch biting, lots of us are looking to make savings on our fuel bills, here are some industry tips on how to save money:
- When talking to your installer about replacing your boiler, don't forget about temperature controls. The operating efficiency of a condensing boiler can be significantly enhanced by up to 13% when installed with the correct heating controls.
- Upgrade old inefficient boilers with a Worcester Bosch Greenstar A-rated boiler installed by a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer such as Arrow Heating and get a free 5 year manufacturer's warranty for total peace of mind. Changing from an old standard efficiency boiler to an 'A' rated condensing boiler can save up to 30% on your fuel bills.
- Turn off heating in rooms not being used and close the doors to these rooms.
- Open internal doors to rooms that get the most sun - after all, the sun is the cheapest form of energy. Opening doors to sunny rooms means that the warm air circulates throughout the house rather than remaining trapped in one room.
- Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows. Do not cover radiators with curtains. Keep furniture away from radiators if possible - an upholstered sofa will block the heat, stopping it getting into the room. This is uneconomical as modern radiators provide heat by convection as well as radiation, so by covering the radiator you will be impeding its performance.
- Turn down the thermostat. Every degree centigrade you raise the temperature, you are adding another 10% to the cost of heating your home and to the resulting emissions.
- Don't set your domestic water to a scalding temperature - setting your cylinder thermostat to 60°C/140°F should be adequate.
- Consider installing solar panels to supply your hot water requirements, not only saving you money but saving the environment too!
- Upgrade your radiator valves by installing Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) to those radiators that do not have then, enabling you to control individual rooms more effectively.
- Corrosion in your central heating system (boiler, pipework, radiators etc) will make your heating system less energy efficient and cost you money. Give your central heating system a 'detox' by having a system power flush to regain circulation and optimum efficiency thereby saving money on fuel bills.
- Even if your boiler is not all that old, it is really important that you use a qualified and experienced engineer to undertake an annual service, especially leading up to the winter months, to ensure it is running at its most efficient. What's more, a regular 'check up' will help to prolong the life of your boiler, avoiding a lot of costly repairs.
- Fix dripping taps and turn them off properly - a dripping hot water tap wastes energy and enough hot water in one week to fill half a bath.
- By insulating your loft and cavity wall space you can make your home more energy efficient and save up to 60% on your heating bills.
