Worcester Greenskies solar panels harness the power in direct or diffused sunlight and cloudy skies, converting the energy into heat, to produce hot water for the home.
The solar panels have been designed to complement existing heating systems which use a store of hot water in a cylinder and they are a perfect partner to Worcester’s Greenstar regular and system boilers.
A typical well-sized solar panel system should provide around 50-70% of the domestic hot water requirements of a home.
Practising what we Preach!
In order that we could 'practise what we preach' we installed Worcester Greenskies solar panels at our own home. We used two inset Worcester Greenskies solar panels, together with a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30 CDI system boiler, a 250 litre unvented solar cylinder and control everything using a Honeywell CM927 RF programmable room thermostat. The cylinder, pump station and solar controls sit very neatly in our airing cupboard, the boiler is in the garage and the inset solar panels are sited on the roof at the back of the house. The solar panels actually point towards a very dense woodland immediately behind our garden perimeter, as we are positioned on a hill these trees are higher than the roof meaning that even in the height of summer we are mostly in shade. Even so we still achieve the majority of our hot water requirements from the two solar panels, proving that even in Britain's climate they still work much to most people's amazement!
The myth about solar energy
Many people are under the common misconception that solar energy only works when there is constant bright sunshine and the temperatures are constantly soaring way above 20 deg C- which is obviously not Great Britain!
This is not true!
Worcester Greenskies solar panels operate using both direct and diffused sunlight, absorbing light and are not dependent on high temperatures nor are they dependent on long spells of unbroken sunshine. The panels are coated in a product that ensures the system is effective even on cloudy days. We have the proof in our own home should you need to see it for yourselves.
